Not So Fast, Hold The Re-Build

Hold on Mavs fans. Just a week ago,  many of you had Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson tied to the cross. Let’s go over what has happened since then. Chris Kaman signed. Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones to the Mavs for Ian Mahinmi. Elton Brand signed.  Brendan Haywood amnestied. Now, O.J. Mayo has signed with the Mavericks as well. Here is how the current Mavs roster shapes up for the 2012-2013 season.

Point guard:Darren Collison, Rodrigue BeauboisJared Cunningham
Shooting guard:O.J. Mayo, Dahntay JonesDominique Jones
Small forward:Shawn Marion, Vince Carter, Jae Crowder
Power forward:Dirk Nowitzki, Elton Brand
Center:Chris Kaman, Brandan WrightBernard James

Is Deron Williams on this roster? No. Was he supposed to be? Yes. When most of you in Mavs Nation panicked and were ready to get the torches and pitchforks out, Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson stayed calm.

The Mavericks, believe it or not, have improved, despite the swing and miss on Deron Williams. They have quietly put together an even stronger supporting cast around Dirk Nowitzki. We lost a Hall of Fame point guard in Jason Kidd, but that point guard will turn 40 years old next March. Instead we have a young point guard in Darren Collison who can create and attack the rim. This is a huge upgrade for a Mavericks offense that became consistently stagnant last year.

Chris Kaman will instantly plant himself as the best center in franchise history. Brendan Haywood just didn’t cut it. For some reason last season, we were trying to use him on the post as a SCORING OPTION. That plan was never going to work out. This will be the best team Kaman has ever played on, and if he can stay healthy the sky is the limit.

Elton Brand vs Luis Scola. Some may say that Scola was the better option here, but Brand was going to cost less, and that’s how it played out. Elton Brand will cost us only $2.2 million for one year, instead of the $13 million Scola will receive with the Suns for 3 years. If you look at the numbers, Brand didn’t put up as many points, but he also played 4 less minutes per game.

Then there is O.J. Mayo. Some people forget just how good this guy can be. He finished runner up in the Rookie of the Year race, losing to some guy named Derrick Rose. He is only 24 years old. On Memphis, he became a guy who was not a first or second option. For the Mavericks, he will be one of the main cogs on offense. He could be a long term solution to the Jet departure. Another low risk, high reward type of move by Mark and Donnie.

Let us not forget. This is not a long term plan. Each of these moves are short term. Kaman, Collison, and Brand are 1 year contracts. O.J. Mayo is a one year contract with a 2nd year option. Mark and Donnie have set us up to compete this year, and as crazy as it sounds could be better than the team that got swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

We can always count on the Mark & Donnie team. Have we ever been in rebuild mode with these two?

Buckle up Mavs Nation and get ready!

Awesome job Ryan. I also like the fact that you broken down every addition the Mavs have picked up. Im so tired of these so called “fans” overreacting over the fact of not getting DWill and was highly impatient from them not picking up other free agents as if they were not purused. Tired of the impatient fans that are here. This why why you guys is not the owner or president of basketball teams and they are. Now all of a sudden your back on the Mavs sacks. GTFOH! Great article Ryan. Keep it up. MFFL right here since ’88

Bunch of role players. I see the Mavs in the playoffs as a 7 or 8 seed and losing first round. Could have done better. Who’s the next signee……Childress?
